About Impact Factor Editing

Scientific editing by a researcher, educator and professional editor

My name is Adam Bodley BSc (Hons), MSc (Res), MAEd, and I am an Advanced Professional Member of the UK Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).

I founded Impact Factor Editing to help researchers communicate their science with clarity, precision and confidence.

Unlike many large editing companies, I work directly with my clients and personally edit every manuscript that I accept. My goal is not simply to correct grammar, but to improve the clarity and readability of scientific writing while preserving the author's scientific meaning and voice.

A career spanning science, education and scientific communication

I have a long-standing interest in science, scientific communication and science education.

Following my undergraduate studies, I worked in environmental science research and public health. During this time, scientific writing formed a central part of my role, and I co-authored several peer-reviewed publications.

In 2007, I retrained as a teacher and spent 12 years teaching biology to high-school students who were learning through English as an additional language. This experience gave me a deep appreciation of the challenges faced by international researchers writing for English-language journals.

While working in education, I was keen to maintain my scientific expertise and professional engagement with research. In 2014, I established a part-time career as a consultant scientific editor and writer alongside my teaching work.

Since 2019, I have worked full time as a consultant scientific editor and writer.

Editorial experience

Over the past decade, I have:

  • edited hundreds of manuscripts that have subsequently been published in more than 200 peer-reviewed journals (a selection can be found here).

  • worked with researchers, universities and publishers from more than 50 countries.

  • developed particular expertise in supporting authors for whom English is an additional language.

  • collaborated with scientists from institutions including the University of Oxford, Cornell University, the Open University and Mahidol University.

  • edited technical reports, funding applications and project summaries for research organisations and public-sector bodies.

  • written numerous scientific articles for publication.

  • edited and ghostwritten more than 50 school science textbooks for one of Thailand's leading educational publishers.

My approach to scientific editing

Scientific editing should improve communication, not alter scientific meaning.

My editing focuses on:

  • improving clarity and readability

  • strengthening logical flow and structure

  • refining academic style and tone

  • ensuring consistency in terminology and presentation

  • helping manuscripts meet the expectations of journal editors and reviewers

The objective is simple: to ensure that reviewers and editors can focus on the quality of your science rather than being distracted by language or presentation issues.

Who I work with

I regularly work with:

  • life scientists and biomedical researchers

  • clinicians and public health researchers

  • PhD students and postdoctoral researchers

  • research groups and academic institutions

  • international researchers preparing manuscripts for English-language journals

Why researchers choose my services

Researchers choose Impact Factor Editing because they work directly with an experienced scientific editor who understands both research and publication.

Rather than passing manuscripts through a large editorial workflow, I provide a personalised service built around scientific understanding, careful editing and clear communication.

Every manuscript is treated confidentially and edited with the same attention to detail that I would expect for my own work.

Here is what some of my clients have said.
